MinIO AIStor® Joins ClickHouse House Mates

For ClickHouse Private, object storage is not a backing tier. It’s primary storage. The object store underneath your deployment sets the ceiling on query performance, ingestion throughput, and how far you can scale, which makes it one of the most consequential choices in the whole stack.

By joining House Mates MinIO AIStor makes that choice even easier, confirming once again that AIStor is a validated and trusted partner for high performance ClickHouse deployments. If you care about performance and growing your data for AI and analytics use cases AIStor gives ClickHouse Private the storage layer it was built to run on.

SharedMergeTree Engine

The underlying architecture that makes this possible is ClickHouse Private’s SharedMergeTree table engine. With this engine all data and metadata live in object storage and are coordinated through ClickHouse Keeper. Every query, every insert, and every merge operation keeps your data within your data store, all without costly and insecure migration. Zero-copy sharing means making your data available without duplication.

That design has a direct consequence. The object store sets the ceiling on query performance, ingestion throughput, and how far the deployment can scale. A slow or incomplete object store does not just add latency at the edges. It caps an engine that was built to process billions of rows per second.

This is the reason the storage choice deserves real scrutiny, and it’s the reason a validated integration is worth more than a generic, imperfect, or gatewayed S3 endpoint.

What Can go Wrong with the Wrong Object Store

On-premises S3-compatible object stores vary widely in how completely they implement the S3 API. Many implement a subset. The gaps tend to stay hidden during a proof of concept and then surface in production, where they break applications that depend on specific S3 behaviors.

Scale is the second common failure point. Plenty of object stores perform well at terabyte or low-petabyte volumes and then degrade as data grows. One of the world's largest automotive manufacturers ran into exactly this. The team evaluated other on-premises object stores before selecting AIStor, because the alternatives fell off at scale.

For a ClickHouse Private deployment, both problems land in the same place: the storage layer that everything depends on.

Why ClickHouse Private Fits for AIStor

AIStor is a high-performance, exascale object store built for AI-era workloads, including the analytics and lakehouse architectures that ClickHouse serves. Three things make it a strong fit for maximizing the performance of ClickHouse Private.

Performance and scale at full S3 compatibility. AIStor is engineered for high throughput and is proven at exabyte scale, with complete S3 API coverage so ClickHouse behaves the same way it would against any fully compliant endpoint. You get cloud-grade object storage economics and performance on infrastructure you control.

Centralization across sites. AIStor can serve as the central repository for all the data you want to run ClickHouse on. Active-active replication lets you keep data consistent across regions, so distributed teams query the same source of truth rather than maintaining drifting copies.

Extensibility once data is centralized. After your data lives in one place, it becomes available to more than ClickHouse. AIStor Tables provides native Apache Iceberg support, which lets the same data feed real-time analytics, observability, and AI and machine learning pipelines without copying it into a separate system.

Reference Architecture

AIStor centralizes data from distributed sites through active-active replication into one namespace. ClickHouse Private queries it all in place through the S3 API

What House Mates means for ClickHouse customers

The House Mates program exists because customers asked for integrations they can trust, certified experts in their region, and the ability to buy through familiar channels. For the most important part of a lakehouse stack - the foundational storage layer - MinIO's place in the program signals that AIStor is the best fit for on-premesis ClickHouse in production.

You can find MinIO and other partners in the ClickHouse House Mates directory, and you can read more about the program in the ClickHouse announcement.

Whether you're exploring AI-native object storage or planning your next deployment, we'd love to help.
