Bridge On-Premises Data to Databricks Without Moving It: A Live Hands-On Workshop

If your organization uses Databricks but your data needs to remain on-premises, how do you make that data available for analytics without creating another copy or moving it somewhere else?

That is one of the problems we wanted to address with AIStor Table Sharing, and it is the focus of two upcoming AIStor Table Sharing with Databricks: Live Hands-on Workshops that I will be hosting.

For many organizations, keeping enterprise data on-premises is a requirement, whether for security, governance, sovereignty, cost, or operational reasons. AIStor Table Sharing is a native implementation of the OpenSharing Protocol (previously Delta Sharing), giving Databricks users a way to securely access and query that data while it stays in AIStor. We have covered the mechanics of how that works in detail in AIStor Table Sharing Connects Databricks Directly to On-Premises Data in AIStor; now it is time to learn it hands-on.

What makes these workshops different is that we are not just going to talk about how that works. We are going to build it.

What We'll Do Together

In two hours, you'll go from configuration to a working, secured, and monitored table share.

Building the Share

We'll start by creating a table share with Delta and Iceberg data, using the Delta Universal Format so both table types can live in the same share. From there, you w'll:

  • Create the share and issue a token
  • Download the profile file that carries the token
  • Create the provider in Databricks
  • Query the shared data

Securing Access

Making data available is only useful if you can control who has access to it. We'll work through:

  • IAM policies and scoped permissions
  • Token-based access
  • Restricting access to specific data

Monitoring and Auditing

Once a share is in use, we'll look at what happens next, using audit logs and Prometheus metrics. You'll work through scenarios such as:

  • Tracing consumer activity
  • Managing tokens
  • Responding to a compromised token, where revocation takes effect across the whole deployment immediately rather than waiting on expiry

This is the part I'm especially looking forward to, because this isn't a webinar. You'll have your own lab environment and will build the configuration yourself.

Why Offer This as a Live Workshop

I developed the AIStor Table Sharing with Databricks learning path in MinIO Academy as a self-paced way for learners to develop these skills. The full learning path includes hands-on labs and a final assessment, and goes deeper into the whole table-sharing workflow than two hours allows.

For these two workshops, I'm taking part of that learning experience and teaching it live.

Working through a configuration while an instructor is there to explain what is happening and answer questions is a different kind of learning. My goal is to help you understand not only the steps involved, but also why you would configure and secure the environment in a particular way.

The workshop isn't meant to replace the complete MinIO Academy learning path. It's a chance to get hands-on with the technology, work through the core use case with me, and then continue learning at your own pace if you want to go deeper.

What You'll Leave With

By the end of the workshop, you'll have:

  • Built and consumed an AIStor table share from Databricks
  • Worked with live Delta and Iceberg tables in AIStor
  • Configured scoped access
  • Used monitoring and audit capabilities to track activity

More importantly, you'll have worked through the workflow yourself rather than just seeing it demonstrated.

You'll also have the opportunity to complete the MinIO Accredited AIStor Table Sharing Specialist Assessment after the workshop. The assessment covers the complete table-sharing workflow:

  • Access control
  • IAM policies and S3 permissions
  • Token management
  • Delta and Iceberg table protection
  • Deployment considerations
  • Audit logging and Prometheus metrics

If you pass with a score of 80% or higher, you'll earn the MinIO Accredited AIStor Table Sharing Specialist digital badge and certificate recognizing your validated skills.

Join Me

The workshops are designed for data engineers, platform architects, and infrastructure/storage engineers working with hybrid or on-premises Databricks environments. This is intermediate-level training, so a basic understanding of AIStor, object storage, and Databricks will help. Registered participants get setup instructions ahead of time so we can get into the labs quickly.

We're offering two live sessions to accommodate attendees across different time zones:

The workshops are free, but each session stays small so participants get the most out of the hands-on format. Space is limited to 40 people per workshop, so register early if you would like to join us.

If you can't attend a live session, or want to go deeper afterward, the complete AIStor Table Sharing with Databricks learning path is available in MinIO Academy for learners with access to the training. Explore the self-paced learning path in the MinIO Academy.

I'm looking forward to getting into the labs and working through this with you.

Whether you're exploring AI-native object storage or planning your next deployment, we'd love to help.
